US military puts Iran war’s cost at at least 47.1 billion dollars

US Central Command supplied Congress with an estimate of at least 47.1 billion dollars for the Iran war through mid-October. Replacing expended munitions amounts to about 29 billion dollars. The estimate excludes damage to regional US bases, while a request for additional military funding remains unapproved and lawmakers have sought a fuller accounting.

Congress receives a higher estimate

US Central Command, the military command responsible for the Middle East, supplied lawmakers with an estimate putting the Iran war’s military cost at at least 47.1 billion dollars through mid-October. Damage to US bases in the region is excluded. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had given lawmakers an estimate of about 37.5 billion dollars three months earlier, also excluding damage to bases.[1], [2]

Munitions replacement is the largest item

About 29 billion dollars is allocated in the estimate to replacing expended munitions. Replacing lost equipment amounts to another 6.1 billion dollars, while incremental costs, including support for American service members, total roughly 11.9 billion dollars. The Congressional Budget Office estimated in September that continuing the war could cost about 2 to 3 billion dollars monthly, partly to replace defensive interceptor missiles.[1]

Funding request awaits approval

The administration’s request for supplemental military funding this year has not passed. Democrats have sought a more detailed accounting from Hegseth. A Pentagon inspector general report in September identified strategic munitions inventory shortfalls, and the Defense Department has been working to accelerate production. The administration disputes that the military faces shortages. Trump has suggested hostilities could resume after the midterm elections unless Iran agrees to a deal.[1]
