Netherlands pledges 500 million euros in military aid to Ukraine

The Netherlands announced a new 500 million euro military assistance package for Ukraine during talks between Rob Jetten and Volodymyr Zelensky in The Hague. The support includes air-defence equipment and drones. Their discussions also covered energy and defence cooperation, as Ukraine seeks help against Russian aerial attacks and prepares for further peace negotiations. A firm date for the next meeting has not yet been confirmed.

A new package announced in The Hague

The Netherlands announced a further 500 million euros in military aid for Ukraine on October 28. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said the package included drones and air-defence equipment. The pledge came during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to The Hague.[1], [2]

Zelensky said the package was being prepared during the autumn and stressed its importance in repelling Russian aerial attacks. The announcement described planned support rather than a completed transfer of every item. The leaders also discussed cooperation on energy and defence during their meeting.[1]

Defence cooperation accompanies economic support

Their agenda included Bliksem, a European project to develop an interceptor against medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. The discussion did not establish that the system was operational. A Dutch trade-minister visit to Kyiv also brought an announcement of 1.2 billion euros in nonmilitary support, intended for economic recovery over the next three years.[1]

Peace talks discussed without a firm date

Zelensky also discussed the US-mediated peace process with Jetten. He said he expected talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States in Abu Dhabi in November, suggesting November 6 to 10. A firm date was not yet confirmed by Washington, and the Kremlin had not confirmed a timetable either. Zelensky said conditions in the Middle East could affect the choice of venue.[1]
