UN seeks answers over employee’s death in Houthi custody

United Nations officials want an independent investigation into the death of human rights employee Mohammad el-Shami in Yemen. He had been detained since June 2024. His family learned of his death only recently and received no explanation, while the UN is also seeking the release of other detained personnel. The UN previously suspended work in some areas over staff-safety concerns.

Family seeks an explanation

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an impartial investigation after Mohammad el-Shami died while detained by the Houthis in Yemen. El-Shami worked for the UN human rights office, which monitors rights conditions. The UN announced the death on October 31 and said its circumstances remained unclear. He had been held since June 2024 by the Houthi movement that controls parts of Yemen.[1], [2]

Türk calls for the release of seven colleagues

The family was informed only recently, although the death had occurred more than a month earlier, according to the UN. Relatives were given no explanation of how he died. Human rights chief Volker Türk demanded a prompt, independent and thorough inquiry and transparency from the Houthi authorities. He also expressed concern for seven colleagues detained alongside el-Shami who remained in custody, asking for their immediate, unconditional release.[1]

Detentions have disrupted UN work

The June 2024 detentions affected UN and civil-society personnel whom the Houthis accused of spying for the United States and Israel; those allegations have not been independently established. El-Shami was the second UN employee to die in Houthi detention after a World Food Programme worker in February 2025. The UN suspended operations in some Houthi-held areas that month over concerns for staff safety.[1]
