Provisional election results give Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell’s National Democratic Congress 14 of Grenada’s 15 parliamentary seats. Mitchell’s party expands its majority

Provisional results from Grenada’s November general election gave Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell’s National Democratic Congress, known as NDC, 14 of the country’s 15 parliamentary seats. The opposition New National Party, or NNP, took the remaining seat in St. George North West, won by Adrian Joseph. The distribution awaits confirmation through the Parliamentary Elections Office’s official recount.[1], [2]

NDC had returned to government with nine seats in 2022. That election ended nine years of NNP rule under Keith Mitchell. The new distribution would expand the governing party’s representation from nine seats to fourteen and leave the opposition with one. NDC previously formed governments in 1990 and 2008, but lost the election after each term. Confirmation would give the party consecutive general-election victories for the first time.[1]

NDC leads the popular vote

NDC received 37,369 votes, approximately 61 per cent of valid ballots, while NNP received 22,567 votes and 36.84 per cent. The gap between the two parties was 14,802 votes.[1]

The Democratic People’s Movement finished third with 1,189 votes, or 1.94 per cent. Five other political parties together received 139 votes.[1]

All polling divisions have reported

All 282 polling divisions had reported results. Turnout was put at 63.3 per cent, with 61,460 ballots cast from an electorate of 97,031 registered voters. The published table listed 61,264 valid ballots and 196 rejected ballots. Another 145 spoiled ballot papers appeared separately. The election office’s official counting process will determine the final certified result for the election in which these provisional totals were announced.[1]
