Miller succeeds Wiles on Monday

US President Donald Trump announced on November 6 that Stephen Miller would become White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles. Miller has been deputy chief of staff and a central figure in the administration’s immigration policies. Wiles is moving to Trump’s political operation after overseeing his successful 2024 presidential campaign and serving in the White House.[1], [2]

Trump said Miller would start Monday. Wiles said Friday was her final day in the position, after submitting her resignation in the Oval Office on Thursday. A Republican Party official confirmed that Trump had accepted it. The president thanked Wiles for her service.[1]

A longtime adviser takes the senior post

Miller joined Trump’s first presidential campaign as an adviser in 2016 and remained a close confidant through both administrations. Before this promotion, he also served as homeland security adviser. His work included a leading role in the administration’s immigration crackdown. White House communications director Steven Cheung praised the appointment and portrayed Miller as a longstanding advocate of the president’s agenda.[1]

Democrats plan to continue scrutiny

The appointment followed midterm elections in which Democrats won control of the House and Senate. Some counting was still incomplete. Democratic Representative Robert Garcia, expected to lead the House Oversight Committee, said his party intended to keep investigating Miller and challenging his policies in Congress and the courts. Garcia’s accusations about unconstitutional immigration raids were his political and legal assessment. Wiles defended the administration’s border, tax and economic policies in her departure message.[1]
