MAVEN's finding and ALMA's null result do not measure the same thing

MAVEN data support a local reconnection pattern at Mars, while the ALMA search found no candidate only in the frequencies examined; one bears on mechanism, the other on a bounded null result.

What was measured?

MAVEN's magnetometer, electron analyzer and STATIC ion measurements showed a local particle-and-field pattern like Earth's Dungey cycle in some Martian auroras. Without a global Martian field, the finding is limited to one event above a crustal region. A SETI study searched two narrow frequency windows in Band 3 data from four archival ALMA observations and found no candidate above its threshold. The results answer different questions.[1], [2]

A positive observation and a bounded absence

Agreement among MAVEN's three instruments supports the local-mechanism interpretation, but whether it appears over other crustal regions or in other Martian auroras remains unknown. ALMA's lack of a candidate applies only to the searched data, thresholds and signal forms; it does not establish that other frequencies lack technosignatures. The galactic-population estimate for earlier pointings is also a model output, not an individually verified star count. The positive finding faces a generalization limit, while the null search faces a coverage limit.[1], [2]

Two separate confirmation paths

The signals to watch are likewise separate. Joint particle-and-field measurements of the same cycle over other crustal regions would strengthen the MAVEN interpretation; failure to repeat would narrow its scope. For ALMA, more observations, wider frequency coverage and additional signal forms would enlarge the searched space. Another null adds only to that coverage, while an above-threshold candidate would require independent confirmation. The studies cannot be reduced to a discovery count: one tracks whether a local mechanism reappears, the other an explicitly defined search scope.[1], [2]
