Chandra publishes 16 galaxy images layering X-rays over Webb and Hubble data

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory released a gallery of 16 galaxies, among them M82, Centaurus A, the Sombrero galaxy M104 and the Whale galaxy NGC 4631. Each image layers Chandra's X-ray view over data from other telescopes, including the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble and the Very Large Telescope's MUSE instrument.

Reported development

Chandra publishes 16 galaxy images layering X-rays over Webb and Hubble data NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory released a gallery of 16 galaxies, among them M82, Centaurus A, the Sombrero galaxy M104 and the Whale galaxy NGC 4631. Each image layers Chandra's X-ray view over data from other telescopes, including the James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble and the Very Large Telescope's MUSE instrument. The set spans spiral, elliptical and irregular galaxies, from the nearby starburst M82 to the interacting pair Arp 143 and the merger NGC 3256. X-rays trace gas heated to millions of degrees by winds from massive stars, along with black holes and neutron stars that other wavelengths miss.[1]

Details in the report

NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory released a gallery of 16 galaxies, among them M82, Centaurus A, the Sombrero galaxy M104 and the Whale galaxy NGC 4631. X-rays trace gas heated to millions of degrees by winds from massive stars, along with black holes and neutron stars that other wavelengths miss. Data from IXPE, Swift, NuSTAR, Gemini and the European Southern Observatory also feed the composites. NASA issued the gallery as a public image release; no new paper accompanies it.[1]
