Magnitude 3.2 Compton earthquake was measured on an urban fault

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake near Compton overnight on September 6 was measured over the Newport-Inglewood fault zone. The Los Angeles Times and NBC Los Angeles reported shaking across multiple counties. Initial reports listed no significant damage or injuries. This small tremor offers no basis for inferring when a larger earthquake might occur or how likely one is.

The tremor was measured southwest of Compton

The US Geological Survey’s initial measurement placed the magnitude 3.2 earthquake about 4 kilometres southwest of Compton overnight on September 6. NBC Los Angeles reported that shaking was felt in Los Angeles, Orange and surrounding counties. The Los Angeles Times gave the same magnitude and epicentral area for the event; both accounts covered the overnight Compton earthquake.[1], [2]

The epicentre lay on the Newport-Inglewood fault zone

The Los Angeles Times placed the epicentre directly over the Newport-Inglewood fault zone, which crosses densely populated parts of Southern California. NBC Los Angeles reported that shaking was felt in multiple counties. Initial coverage listed no significant damage or injuries.[1], [2]

One event does not time a larger earthquake

The earthquake was measured on a known urban fault; that location does not say when future earthquakes will happen. Preliminary magnitude estimates can change slightly as more measurements arrive. The supported findings for this event are limited: a magnitude 3.2 tremor occurred near Compton, was felt across a broad area and initial reports listed no significant damage. This limited initial picture can be reassessed as new monitoring data arrive.[1], [2]
