Seven of nine planetary boundaries are now outside the safe operating space

The 2026 Planetary Health Check assessed seven of nine Earth-system boundaries as outside the safe operating space, with pressure increasing across all seven. The 120-page scientific assessment tracks each process with control variables and does not assign a single collapse date. Ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading remain within the safe range.

Seven boundaries outside the safe range

The 2026 Planetary Health Check places seven of nine planetary boundaries outside the safe operating space. The institute’s 120-page assessment and independent coverage agree on the count. Climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater change, biogeochemical flows, novel entities and ocean acidification make up the seven. The framework evaluates Earth-system processes with defined control variables; the count is an assessment of pressure, not a dated forecast of collapse.[1], [2]

Two boundaries remain inside

Stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading are the two boundaries still assessed within the safe operating space. Courthouse News Service reported that distinction alongside the seven transgressed boundaries, while the scientific assessment tracks the same nine-part framework. The two safer readings do not cancel the other results: they specify which processes remain inside the range and prevent the headline count from being mistaken for all nine.[2], [1]

Pressure across connected systems

Both accounts say pressure is rising across the seven boundaries outside the safe range. The assessment treats them as connected parts of one Earth system, so the report does not present seven isolated gauges. It also avoids a single deadline for irreversible change. Its narrower statement is that movement farther beyond the assessed limits corresponds to greater risk of large-scale, persistent and potentially hard-to-reverse change, while the control variables allow later checks to track direction.[1], [2]
