Milano stays on maximum points

Numia Vero Volley Milano, the women’s volleyball team, beat Bergamo 3-0 away at the ChorusLife Arena on 21 October. The visitors won their fourth league match from four, taking the sets 25-14, 25-23 and 25-15. Paola Egonu scored 22 points and was named the match’s most valuable player.[1], [2]

Egonu finished with one ace, one block and a 55 per cent attack success rate. Rebecca Piva added 10 points, including two aces, and Anna Danesi contributed eight points. Milano collected 12 blocks as a team. Bergamo’s leading scorer was Kipp with 16 points, followed by Pietrini with six and Van Avermaet with four.[1]

Bergamo’s second-set recovery falls short

Bergamo kept pace in the opening set through seven points before Milano moved 14-7 ahead. Egonu contributed seven points in that set. The home side then offered its closest challenge in the second. Milano led 18-12, but Bergamo narrowed the difference, with a Pietrini ace bringing the score to 20-21. The visitors protected the remaining advantage and won the set 25-23.[1], [2]

Egonu scored nine points in the second set. Aida Dautova made her league debut during that period. A service error by Esposito brought the set to an end after Danesi had helped Milano restore separation in the closing exchanges.[2]

Milano pulls away again in the third

Milano opened the third set 4-0. Bergamo reached 7-9, but the visitors widened the gap again, with a Bosio block making it 11-7 and an Egonu attack extending the score to 16-9. Egonu later served an ace for 20-12. A Bassi service error ended the contest. Sato and Gennari entered late. The three sets lasted 73 minutes in total, watched by 3,411 spectators.[1], [2]

Afterwards, Milano player Khalia Lanier said the team had stayed solid at decisive moments. She praised Egonu’s attacking, Fersino’s defence and Bosio’s distribution, and described work on weaknesses from the previous season. Bergamo’s Silke Van Avermaet said her side had struggled to sustain its game. Milano’s next fixture is at home against Busto Arsizio on 24 October.[1], [2]
