The screen asks again every year
The proposals dated 23 September ask Google to offer a choice of search service on first use of an Android phone and the first time Chrome opens, then to ask again every year. An AI assistant joins the list only when it meets technical and security tests. Sarah Cardell said people already use ChatGPT and Perplexity as a search service, and that those services are not on Google's screen.[1]
A provider that appears on the screen has to attribute publisher content. A person can open the page the answer came from. The text covers what a chosen assistant is allowed to show, along with which name sits on the list.[1]
The default on a phone in hand stays as it is
The text is a consultation. Comments close on 9 October. The authority said its aim is a final decision by the end of the year. Until that decision, the search service a phone opens is the one already set.[1]
Google's strategic market status in general search dates from October 2025. Publisher controls took effect on 3 June, and fair ranking plus data portability on 17 June. The choice screen is the piece still open. Once a final text exists, the check is which assistants meet the technical and security tests.[1]
