The team is dispersed, the asset remains

According to the report, which rests on the Financial Times, Google DeepMind disbanded the team dedicated to AlphaFold without closing the project. Most of the original paper's authors were reassigned over the past year to Gemini model work, enzyme design, fusion and genomics. John Jumper, Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel moved to Anthropic; about 25 percent of the full-time authors left the company altogether and some went to Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug-discovery arm. Pushmeet Kohli, VP of research, said “the strategy has evolved” away from organising AI researchers around single scientific problems.[1]

Pushmeet Kohli's phrasing describes a reallocation decision. What it does not describe is who made it, whether the authors were consulted, and who will maintain the work the dispersed team leaves behind. The report contains nothing about how AlphaFold's public tools and database will be run from here. The competing reading is strong: reassignment inside a research organisation is ordinary, and it may reflect the researchers' own preferences as much as a management choice.[1]

The same question inside one career

Lilian Weng, a Thinking Machines co-founder, stepped down on 27 July citing health. In her note she said “I don't feel I'm able to continue at the pace a startup requires” and that “the amount of consistent stress and workload have pushed me beyond what my health can sustain physically”. Two days later OpenAI said Weng had rejoined and would lead a top-level team focused on accelerating internal AI research and specifically on recursive self-improvement.[2]

AlphaFold stays with Alphabet while the acceleration work Weng now leads sits at OpenAI; in both cases labour moves and the asset stays put. That shared shape establishes no causal link between them; it shows how the load is distributed. The counter-reading matters: Weng named a startup's pace rather than the AI field as a whole, and a large lab may offer a different workload.[1], [2]

A question that can be answered plainly

Google DeepMind stated the dispersal of the team plainly, so it can state the result of that dispersal just as plainly. Who now runs AlphaFold's public tools and database, and with how many full-time staff? How many people are on the teams these AI researchers lead at Anthropic and OpenAI? While those two numbers go unpublished, what remains is a list of names that moved, and what the reallocation gained for whom cannot be measured.[1], [2]
