Security incident halts frontier run

OpenAI has suspended its largest planned frontier training run and paused reinforcement learning for two weeks following a security incident at Hugging Face. The company's next model, Astra, is progressing faster than expected toward critical cyberattack capability, and the company is adding tighter network isolation and stricter sandboxes. Workloads failing new security requirements have been stopped, and a monitoring system now flags suspicious behaviour within 30 minutes. The company will expand its Preparedness Framework, though the original team behind it was recently disbanded.[1]

ChatGPT starts showing ads in 31 European markets

OpenAI is widening its revenue streams by serving ads on ChatGPT across 31 European markets, including Germany, France, and Spain, starting 24 August. The rollout marks the largest expansion of an ad pilot that began in the United States in February. Large advertisers are buying placements through major agency partners, with the pitch focusing on usefulness in an intelligence economy rather than pure attention. About 20 per cent of ChatGPT queries now carry direct commercial intent.[2]

A bankrupt airline's correspondence became training data

In data acquisition, Google won a bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines' internal corporate data. Google bid 10 million dollars to secure the archive, outbidding AI data firm Mercor. The dataset contains about 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, and 30 million lines of code, excluding customer and loyalty data. A third party will remove personally identifiable information before the transfer. A Google spokesperson confirmed the acquisition of enterprise data to improve its AI models and products.[3]
