Claude brings voice conversations to the CarPlay screen

Anthropic added CarPlay support to Claude's iPhone app, letting users start a voice conversation or return to a recent chat from the dashboard. The app cannot operate vehicle or phone functions, and third-party wake words are unsupported. Claude joins ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok and Meta AI in the conversational-app category Apple opened with iOS 26.4.

Conversations begin on the dashboard

Anthropic's iPhone app update brings Claude voice conversations to the CarPlay screen. Opening the app offers a choice between starting a conversation and selecting a recent chat to continue. The opening screen includes an option to begin a hands-free exchange. Third-party wake words are unsupported, so users first open Claude from the CarPlay interface before continuing through its voice function.[1], [2]

Conversation controls without vehicle controls

Claude's CarPlay interface includes controls to mute and unmute, end an exchange or resume it. Visual indicators show when the app is listening and when it is speaking. Claude can answer spoken questions hands-free but cannot operate vehicle or iPhone functions. Apple restricts the types of apps available on CarPlay to limit distractions while driving.[1]

The fifth major chatbot app on CarPlay

Apple opened CarPlay to conversational apps with iOS 26.4. Claude is the fifth major AI chatbot app to join that category, alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok and Meta AI. To offer CarPlay support, these apps must obtain an entitlement from Apple, use its designated interface template and support a voice-control screen.[1], [2]
