Shopify lets browser agents reach checkout with buyer approval

Shopify has extended its browser agent tools from product browsing and carts into checkout. Agents can read or change checkout details and submit an order after the buyer confirms it; steps needing buyer input return control to the shopper. The move gives participating agents a structured route through a purchase, while the company has published no count of completed agent orders.

Checkout joins the agent’s browser tools

Shopify opened its checkout flow to browser-based AI agents on September 28. Earlier WebMCP tools let an agent search a merchant’s catalog and work with a cart; the new tools reach an active checkout. Shopify’s own change notice confirms that an agent can read and update checkout details in the shopper’s browser session. This extends a shopping sequence that previously stopped short of submitting an order through those browser tools.[1], [2]

Three tools divide the payment steps

The named tools are get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout. They let an agent inspect an active checkout, change supported fields such as delivery information, and submit the order after the buyer confirms it. Shopify says the tools share the state of the visible checkout interface and need no extra merchant configuration. TechCrunch reports that Shop Pay is included. This structured path avoids relying on screenshots or scraping the page meant for a human shopper.[1], [2]

Buyer approval remains in the flow

The buyer retains a role at the decisive step. Shopify says the tools hand control back when further input is required, including 3D Secure authentication; order submission follows the shopper’s confirmation. TechCrunch says eligible merchants are receiving the feature and describes a separate hosted server route for agents connecting outside the buyer’s browser. The September announcement gives the browser route an end-to-end checkout capability, but neither account establishes how many agent purchases have actually finished.[1], [2]
