Kodiak plans driverless Texas freight runs for IKEA

Kodiak AI named IKEA Supply as the launch shipper for planned driverless long-haul freight in Texas. The roughly 350 km leg between facilities near Houston and Dallas is targeted for later in 2026. Kodiak has carried IKEA goods on the route with a safety observer aboard; the no-person-in-cab service has not started, and its highway safety case remains in progress.

IKEA is named the launch long-haul shipper

Autonomous-truck developer Kodiak AI named IKEA Supply on September 29 as the first shipper for its planned driverless long-haul service. The companies have carried IKEA goods in Texas since 2022. Kodiak says those operations moved more than 1,300 loads and covered about 1.2 million kilometres (750,000 miles) with a safety observer in the cab. Those are company figures for earlier operations, not a completed service with nobody aboard. The announcement identifies a launch customer for the next phase of an existing relationship.[1], [2]

The first leg lies between Houston and Dallas

The proposed no-person-in-cab leg follows Interstate 45 in Texas. It runs about 350 km between Kodiak facilities near Houston and Dallas. It sits within an established roughly 470 km delivery route from IKEA’s Baytown distribution center to a store in Frisco. Kodiak says its trucks have traveled the area with a safety observer during earlier operations. The company targets the driverless phase for later in 2026. It has not announced that unattended IKEA freight runs have begun.[1]

The safety case remains a launch condition

Before removing the person from the cab, Kodiak says it must finish a long-haul safety case: an evidence-backed argument that its driving system can operate without a human in a defined area. The company also describes dispatch timing, arrival at a specific unloading dock in Frisco and predictive maintenance as parts of preparing the service. Completing that case and starting actual driverless freight are later steps. Naming the shipper and route did not itself complete either one.[1]
