Gemini brings saved instructions into ordinary chats
Google began rolling Skills out globally in Gemini’s main chat interface, bringing reusable instructions beyond its Spark agent. Users can call a saved instruction from the prompt box or combine several for one request. The rollout includes free accounts, while sharing and more reference-file options are planned for the following weeks.

Saved instructions move into Gemini’s prompt box
Google began a global rollout of Skills in ordinary Gemini chats on September 30. The feature stores reusable instructions for recurring tasks and lets people invoke them with a slash command from the main prompt box. Skills had previously been available in Gemini Spark, Google’s interface for longer agent tasks. The new rollout includes free users without Spark access.[1], [2]
Several Skills can guide one request
A user can save instructions for presentation outlines, talking points or a preferred writing style. Gemini can help create a custom skill from a conversation and activate a saved skill automatically when a prompt matches it. Several skills can be combined, such as writing-style instructions and brand guidelines.[1]
Plain-text documents, PDF files and images can be attached as references initially. Google plans to add sharing, Google Drive files and Gemini Notebook notebooks in the following weeks. The initial chat rollout applies to users aged eighteen and over; Workspace customers have a separate access timetable.[1]
Gems migration follows different account timetables
Google plans to begin removing personal-account support for Gems, its saved custom instructions, in November, automatically moving existing instructions into Skills. Business, enterprise and nonprofit Workspace accounts are scheduled to transition in March 2027, followed by education accounts in June 2027. The Google Labs mini-app experiments have a separate shutdown process and are outside that automatic migration promise.[1]
