Tesla replaces its self-driving name in Europe

Tesla has replaced Full Self-Driving with Tesla Assisted Driving on its European websites after criticism from Germany’s transport ministry. The German and French pages now use names emphasizing assistance. Drivers remain responsible for supervising the system, while the US page keeps its previous name. National approvals continue to govern where the software can be used.

European pages now emphasize driving assistance

Tesla has renamed its European driver-assistance software Tesla Assisted Driving, replacing Full Self-Driving. The change follows criticism from Germany’s transport ministry about the previous name. The system provides assistance while the driver supervises its operation.[1], [2]

The former German web address redirects to the renamed page, and the French site uses Tesla Conduite Assistée. Tesla’s US page continues to call the system Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Much of the German product description remains in place, including its requirement for active supervision.[1]

Germany challenged the promise in the old name

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport said on October 6 that the old name was misleading because the system does not undertake the entire driving task. It stressed that drivers must stay attentive and remain fully responsible. Tesla had proposed the replacement name in discussions with the ministry in September.[1]

National approvals still govern software use

Tesla’s European authorization process continues. Its page lists eight approved EU countries, with Germany absent from that list. France and Sweden have raised concerns about speeding. The renamed German page also presents Robotaxi and Cybercab separately from the supervised assistance package; the name change adds no blanket European authorization for driverless use.[1]
