Kakao plans a December trial for its task-running KakaoTalk assistant

Kakao has unveiled Kanana Space, an assistant designed to handle everyday requests inside KakaoTalk, with a closed beta planned for December. The company also presented Kanvas for building agents on personal computers. Its roadmap keeps user approval at important stages and envisages sharing agents, connecting personal agent teams and passing only permitted information between them.

Kanana Space brings requests inside KakaoTalk

South Korean technology company Kakao has presented an assistant designed to carry out everyday tasks within its KakaoTalk messaging application. At the if(kakao)26 conference in Yongin, South Korea, on 13 October, it introduced Kanana Space and opened advance applications for a closed beta planned for December. Selected applicants are to take part in that trial. Chief executive Chung Shin-ae outlined the company's goal of tailoring assistance to individual needs, while design leader Kim Dae-nyeon presented how people would reach the service without learning a separate way to use it.[1], [2]

In Kakao's design, swiping the screen with two fingers brings up its Ryan character. Users can make requests by voice or text for messaging, calendar management, web searches and application-setting changes. The company plans to add orders, gifts, reservations and money transfers later. Its bottled-water example has the assistant choose a previously purchased product, apply available coupons and prepare the order and payment steps.[1], [2]

Kanvas builds agents from a description of the task

Kanvas, Kakao's proposed personal-computer service, addresses the creation and running of AI agents: software that uses tools to complete tasks. A user describes the work, and the service connects the appropriate tools and skills. Kakao says these agents are to operate within approved boundaries, with users checking important stages. The company plans a small-group closed beta before year-end and a feature for sharing useful agents. Its roadmap also envisages a KakaoTalk space for personal agent teams in the first half of next year, including agents built with other development tools.[1], [2]

Project Mosaic supplies permitted context to agents

Kakao is preparing Project Mosaic to turn users' scattered past experiences and needs into context for agents with different roles. It intends to pass each agent only the information required within permitted limits. The company's Kanana model strategy divides smaller tasks handled on phones from complex work sent to larger models. Kakao also plans to release components of Kanana-o, its model for text, images and audio, as open source and to develop checks keeping agents' plans and actions within user consent.[1]
