JR East puts cleaning sensors in four stations, with a robot trial at Akabane

JR East, JR East Trading and SoftBank announced a station-cleaning trial running from October 27 to mid-January 2027. Sensors at four stations track toilet and bin usage. Only Akabane hosts the robot, camera-based dirt detection and passenger cleaning requests. The companies plan to assess cleaning demand and work planning, with robot operation scheduled after the last train.

Four stations collect usage data

JR East, the Japanese railway operator, announced a cleaning trial at Akabane, Oji, Jujo and Higashi-Jujo stations. It is scheduled from October 27 to mid-January 2027. Internet-connected sensors track toilet and bin usage inside the ticket gates, providing data for examining how demand changes with usage and time of day.[1], [2]

JR East Trading and SoftBank are also involved in the project, with JR East Environment Access carrying out station cleaning. The companies aim to maintain cleaning quality while responding to labour shortages and workload. Their trial examines whether cleaning can follow observed demand and anticipate where it is needed.[1]

Akabane hosts the robot and camera tests

Only Akabane tests a physical-AI toilet-cleaning robot, AI dirt detection from a temporary concourse camera and cleaning requests sent by passengers through QR codes. Oji, Jujo and Higashi-Jujo only collect toilet and bin sensor data. Robot test operation takes place after the last train, while usage monitoring runs between the first and last trains.[1]

Requests support cleaning decisions

Passenger requests and camera detections provide reference information for cleaning decisions; the companies say they do not guarantee an immediate response by a cleaner. A shared management platform combines and displays the data. Its usefulness for planning and operational decisions is part of the experiment. Expansion to other stations remains a future objective, with no measured productivity result from this trial yet.[1]
