TikTok restores the Musk documentary’s advertising account
TikTok has reinstated Alex Gibney’s Musk documentary advertising account, attributing its suspension to an error. Distributor Bleecker Street had appealed after losing the ability to buy ads or boost posts during a major expansion in the film’s theatrical release. Its unpaid account remained active, but much of the promotional weekend passed before paid access returned.

Paid promotion returns after the distributor’s appeal
TikTok restored the Musk advertising account on October 18. The documentary by director Alex Gibney covers Elon Musk. The film’s distributor, Bleecker Street, had appealed the suspension. TikTok attributed the interruption to an error; its US spokesperson confirmed the restoration directly to The Verge. The decision came during a weekend when the documentary was expanding its North American theatrical release.[1], [2]
The unpaid account stayed active while advertising stopped
Bleecker Street received Friday’s notice warning of permanent suspension for repeated breaches of TikTok’s political-content rules. It then lost the ability to purchase advertisements or pay to boost posts, while the film’s ordinary unpaid account remained active. Correspondence described by The Hollywood Reporter shows rejected promotions followed by appeals. A trailer faced a political-content rejection, while another item was refused on static-image grounds.[1]
The film expanded while promotional time was being lost
The documentary reached more than 470 North American screens after initially opening in four New York and Los Angeles cinemas. Bleecker Street said the interruption cost promotional time while audiences were choosing films, and remained concerned that future advertisements could be rejected. Gibney spent more than three years investigating Musk’s companies, political activities and purchase of Twitter. Meta and YouTube had previously reversed trailer-ad rejections; X also refused advertising for the film.[1]
