Meta plans teen beauty-filter restrictions for early 2027

Meta plans an early 2027 start for restrictions on teenage users’ access to filters that imitate cosmetic procedures, following an August settlement with US states. Subtle skin and eye effects remain permitted. States are nearing their deadline to define the prohibited effects, while teenagers and digital-rights advocates question where that boundary should fall.

Restrictions target cosmetic-procedure effects

Meta intends to introduce its teenage-user restrictions in early 2027, targeting effects that make faces look as if they have undergone cosmetic procedures. The company supplied the schedule to NPR, the US public-radio news organization. The rules follow an August settlement signed by 47 US states and three territories, together with Washington DC. Younger users retain access to playful effects that turn them into puppies or elves. NPR’s own reporting supplies this account.[1]

States are defining the boundary

The attorneys general are approaching their two-month deadline to send Meta a joint definition of restricted effects. The lead offices in California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey either declined to provide an update or did not respond to NPR. Subtle skin smoothing and a slight eye glow remain permitted. David Greene of digital-rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation questioned how conflicting state assessments of an effect would be resolved.[1]

Teenagers seek a place in the discussion

Student Mia Lerner said even small edits influence how young people compare themselves with others. She asked for teens to join the discussions. Meta pointed to earlier work with teens without answering whether it is doing so now. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier described a broader proposed KIDS Act ban on all beauty filters for minors. That proposal and Meta’s planned enforcement timetable remain distinct regulatory steps.[1]
