Grok Imagine releases a seven-minute first episode of Odyssey

Grok Imagine has shared an Odyssey adaptation made with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. The seven-minute release is presented as the opening episode of a series, following Elon Musk’s earlier promise of a feature film. Its launch post names the creative collaborators and asks viewers whether they want a production breakdown.

A series begins with seven minutes

Grok Imagine, the AI video tool promoted by Elon Musk, released the opening installment of its Odyssey adaptation in a post dated 23 October. The video lasts seven minutes and is labelled the first episode of a series. Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker are named as creative collaborators. The announcement invites viewers to say whether they want an explanation of the production process. The episode was shared on X. Wonder Studios and Walker both specialize in filmmaking with AI tools, according to Variety.[1], [3]

Footage follows Odysseus and his family

The episode combines sea and ship imagery with scenes of Odysseus and his family. Gizmodo describes Penelope speaking to Odysseus before he goes to war and Telemachus learning to fight at home. Its description also includes Odysseus striking a table and scenes aboard a boat. TechCrunch describes a voiceover setting out the backstory before dialogue between the characters. It notes that the dialogue is not delivered in ancient Greek. Those elements establish the material actually released: landscapes, characters, spoken exchanges and narrated background within a short adaptation of the ancient story. In Gizmodo’s description, Penelope tells Odysseus he must go to war in one scene, while another character is shown vomiting over the side of a boat.[1], [2]

A feature-film promise preceded the episode

Musk had said roughly three months earlier that Grok would produce a feature-length adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey, describing the intended film as historically accurate. The release now carries an episodic designation. Christopher Nolan’s separate adaptation forms the backdrop to that promise: Musk had previously criticised its casting. TechCrunch describes Nolan’s production as a combination of visual effects and extensive practical filmmaking, shot in six countries with a large cast and crew, and released in July. Variety dates the earlier promise to July: Musk set a target of completing the feature before the year ended. His message was accompanied by a separate three-minute AI short posted by an X user. Variety identifies two casting choices Musk had criticized: Elliot Page as Sinon and Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. Musk claimed they were selected to meet the Academy’s representation and inclusion standards for Oscar eligibility. That explanation of Nolan’s casting remains Musk’s assertion.[1], [3]
