Apple Watch begins testing conversation rewind and recaps

Apple has begun developer testing of optional Apple Watch functions that recover recently spoken words and make conversation notes. Live Rewind displays a short transcript, while Siri Recaps saves selected information for later review. The features combine watch and iPhone processing with Apple services, with privacy protections described by the company.

Conversation tools enter developer testing

Apple has begun developer testing of Live Rewind and Siri Recaps, optional conversation features for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. They belong to Audio Intelligence, Apple’s collection of sound-related artificial intelligence functions announced in September. The rollout follows an announcement from Apple in India; distribution had not yet reached the US when the initial account appeared. Public beta testing is due to follow before general availability.[1], [2]

Live Rewind brings the preceding 15 seconds of speech onto the watch as text when the wearer presses the Digital Crown twice. Unsaved snippets disappear after 30 seconds. Siri Recaps instead creates a short sentence and bullet points containing key information from a conversation, such as tasks or dates.[1]

Wearers choose when to keep notes

Recaps can be enabled manually or scheduled, and stopped through Control Center. Apple says they omit speaker identification and emotional interpretation. They do not run while the wearer uses headphones for music or noise cancellation. Saved notes are offered for review at day’s end and the first watch unlock the following morning. Users can transfer them to Notes or Journal; unreviewed recaps expire within seven days.[1]

Apple describes protected audio processing

Apple says raw audio is handled in protected memory and passed securely to the paired iPhone. The phone converts it into condensed text, which is encrypted for summarization by Private Cloud Compute, Apple’s cloud processing service. According to the company, the cloud material is deleted after processing and synchronized recaps are encrypted. The system is designed to exclude sensitive identifiers, financial information and authentication data from its notes.[1]
