Former Army secretary joins OpenAI
OpenAI is hiring Dan Driscoll, the former US Army secretary, to help expand its work on national and cyber security. The appointment brings a former senior military department official into the AI company as it develops its engagement with security institutions.[1], [2]
New advisory position covers institutional requirements
The company announced the newly created position on Monday, naming Driscoll Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization. He will work with senior leadership and outside partners on how advanced AI can support national security and cybersecurity. Work with US allies and responsible use are part of the stated remit. Within OpenAI, he is expected to help teams understand the operational requirements of national security institutions. The company also describes advice for public and private partners on policy and strategy.[1]
Paperwork and information processing figure in his remit
Driscoll said service members and public servants need better tools, identifying less paperwork, processing more information and getting answers to the appropriate person faster as potential uses. Those are adoption objectives in his statement. His background spans military service, government, law and finance: he attended the University of North Carolina, deployed to Iraq in 2009 and later studied at Yale Law School. He also worked at investment bank BlackArch Partners.[1]
