OpenAI plans to bring ChatGPT conversations and tasks into one workspace
OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs so users can move from a question to a task involving files or connected applications in the same conversation. A limited feedback group comes first, with no firm date for wider access. Codex stays separate, while some subscriptions are moving to a shared usage allowance.

A conversation can continue into a task
OpenAI plans to combine the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT, bringing ordinary conversations and more extensive tasks into the same workspace. The company has notified users that it intends to try the experience with a limited group for feedback before a wider rollout. That wider release has no firm date. The proposed interface lets a user begin with an idea and then ask ChatGPT to carry out work without changing tabs.[1], [2]
Files and connected applications stay in the conversation
In the current arrangement, Chat handles questions, conversations and brainstorming. Work provides a separate area for activities such as research, presentations and website building. OpenAI describes a combined experience in which users can supply files and connected applications, follow a task’s progress and guide the work as it happens. The change therefore covers how a conversation develops into a longer assignment, including reviewing and intervening while the system works.[1]
Codex remains separate as usage allowances are pooled
Codex, OpenAI’s programming product, remains a separate experience in the desktop application. A customer notification also sets out a shared ChatGPT and Codex allowance for Plus, Pro and Business subscriptions starting in December. Instant model use is excluded. OpenAI says the effect depends on the model and intensity of use: most users should see no change, while some may need to wait more often for their allowance to reset. The subscription arrangement accompanies the planned interface merger.[1]
