Cat Wu joins OpenAI to lead core product management
Cat Wu is moving from Anthropic to OpenAI after leading product work on Claude Code. Her new role spans OpenAI’s core products, with enterprise and consumer teams among her collaborators. Wu takes responsibility for core product management
Cat Wu, formerly the product leader for Anthropic’s coding assistant Claude Code, is joining OpenAI to head product management for its core products. OpenAI confirmed the appointment. Wu announced her move after disclosing on 3 November that she had left Anthropic the previous week. Her new position puts her alongside the teams developing products for both businesses and individual users.[1], [2]
Enterprise and consumer teams are part of the role
An OpenAI representative said Wu would report to Tibo Sottiaux and work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products. Wu described user control as a goal of the agents she wants to build, with software supporting people and their teams during delegated work. She also invited users to continue providing feedback on the products.[1]
Claude Code grew from an internal prototype
Wu helped oversee Claude Code’s development from an internal prototype into a commercial coding tool, working with its creator Boris Cherny. She joined Anthropic in summer 2024 after working as a partner at Index Ventures. In 2025, Wu and Cherny briefly moved to coding startup Cursor before returning to Anthropic. OpenAI has its own coding product, Codex, whose use has also extended into work beyond software development.[1]
