Japan spent 15.39 trillion yen on currency intervention as US Treasury defends the move
Japan's Ministry of Finance reported spending 15,399.3 billion yen on currency intervention between 30 July and 26 August. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the July yen purchases in a letter to Senator Elizabeth Warren, arguing that disorderly yen markets risk raising borrowing costs for American families.
Merz prepares a Russia sanctions package after the Leipzig airport drone attack
Welt am Sonntag and Politico reported Chancellor Friedrich Merz is preparing a package combining direct German measures with new EU sanctions after the 4 August attack on a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle airport, with an announcement planned at informal EU foreign ministers' talks in Ireland on Tuesday. Western officials called recent Russian warnings against British forces or arms plants consistent with Moscow's pressure doctrine; this month an explosive-laden drone reached Leipzig's runway with no proven Russian link.
Mladenov warns the Gaza ceasefire could collapse as a rare Jenin airstrike kills three
Board of Peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov said both sides' failure to follow the Gaza roadmap threatens a ceasefire collapse; deployment of the International Stabilization Force has been determined, with Morocco agreeing to take part and Turkiye excluded after an Israeli veto. The Israeli military said it killed three people in Jenin, naming Qais Bitawi as a Hamas operative; Hamas did not claim him and Palestinian Islamic Jihad said he was a senior armed-wing member.
Moody's turns Nigeria's outlook positive while cutting Senegal to Caa2
Moody's affirmed Nigeria's long-term foreign and local currency issuer ratings at B3 and turned the outlook positive, citing a stronger external position, robust current account surpluses and better-than-expected growth. External reserves stood at 53.30 billion dollars on 26 August. The same agency lowered Senegal's ratings to Caa2 from Caa1, saying a power struggle between the executive and the legislature is complicating efforts to handle the debt crisis.
Motorboat noise stunts spiny chromis and breaks their escape reflex
Spiny chromis from the Great Barrier Reef were kept on motorboat noise or natural reef sound for up to 78 days before and after hatching. Fish raised in noise ended up 7 per cent shorter on average; only 68 per cent reacted to a threat, and 40 per cent of those that did swam towards the predator. Sophie Nedelec of the University of Exeter says limiting boat traffic near reefs in the breeding season could reduce the effect.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba tied Gaza troop pledges to a medal and an apology
Nickolay Mladenov named deployment plans for the International Stabilization Force: Morocco will join and Turkiye will not after Israel's veto. Muhoozi Kainerugaba said no UPDF soldier would go to Gaza until Fort Leavenworth honours him with a medal and Senator James Risch apologises. Mladenov kept warning that failure to follow the roadmap risks collapsing the Gaza ceasefire.
Myla warehouse blast kills 37 as Zelenskyy keeps the 1,000-drone-a-day target
Ukrainian officials said 37 people were killed and 42 injured, four of them children, when an explosion tore through a warehouse in Myla, in Kyiv region's Bucha district; almost 400 people were evacuated. Russia said it had struck an ammunition depot, while Ukraine's prosecutor general's office opened a review of explosives stored beside homes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy kept a target of 1,000 drone strikes a day, and Kyrylo Budanov said Ukraine must mobilise at least 30,000 people a month.
Nepal first refused aid, then asked India and China for tunnel rescue teams
Nepal's government asked India and China for specialist help, including tunnel rescue, to fill gaps in its own operations, with teams expected later on Saturday. Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said Nepal has not rejected international rescue offers. Nepal's police put the death toll at 626 and the missing at at least 1,924; Kathmandu also requested refrigeration units.
Only 6.52 per cent of neuro-symbolic studies rerun as Co-Scientist widened its lab loop
An audit by nine authors published on arXiv on 29 August fully or partially reproduced only 85 of 1,304 eligible neuro-symbolic studies, or 6.52 percent. Google DeepMind extended Co-Scientist into a closed-loop pipeline from hypothesis through lab equipment to manuscript drafts. Automation is accelerating while most published artifacts still cannot be rerun.
Only 62-87 per cent of captured flags came from an exploit the trace can show
CTF-ABACUS, published on arXiv on 29 August, reconstructs paths to flags in capture-the-flag challenges step by step; across 1435 attempts trace-verified exploits made up only 62-87 per cent of recovered flags. Apple's Agent Seer description on 28 August builds tests from Model Context Protocol specifications and reports covering every tool on seven separate specs. One addresses score inflation, the other trustworthy testing against the same agent measurement problem.
