US consumer sentiment falls to 47.8 in September
The University of Michigan's preliminary survey shows consumer sentiment declining for a second month. Expectations for personal finances and business conditions weakened, while expected inflation over the coming year rose to 4.6%. Fuel prices and trade tensions weighed on assessments. Final September results are due on 25 September; the current figures remain preliminary.
Yemen fighting displaces 46,000 as air strikes begin around Dhubab
The United Nations says renewed fighting in southwest Yemen displaced at least 46,000 people in one week, with some families on the West Coast and in Taiz fleeing for a second or third time. Yemen's internationally recognised government says it began air strikes against Houthi military equipment around Dhubab and warned civilians to avoid two main roads leading towards Mokha.
A third of the world's forests are growing more and recovering less
Satellite series covering 2001 to 2021 show more than a third of global forests raising productivity while losing resilience, with vapour pressure deficit the primary driver. In Amazonia the same quantity outruns the averages: the hottest dry-season days warm 0.49 °C a decade against 0.21 °C for the annual mean. Productivity is the wrong meter.
A water tank drove the robot; the chip that would replace it has not been built
Wave-based reservoir computing did real work in the water tank: obstacle recognition and live steering. The step that would turn it into a chip lives only in micromagnetic simulation, and that is exactly where the energy claim has to be paid for.
AUTOMATIC1111 without the install, and where the new cost shows up
The tool that once meant a graphics card and a long install now opens in a browser tab, and 11 pipelines, 73 nodes and a sign-in screen mark where the friction moved to.
CapQuiz and DiscoSign change the measure before reporting the improvement
CapQuiz stops comparing a description with a reference text and asks whether the description answers questions about the video. DiscoSign brings its own discourse metrics because ordinary translation scores miss what it sets out to fix. In each, the team that changed the measurement reports the improvement measured by it.
Hormuz's bill lands in freight: the Middle East to China supertanker rate neared 800,000 dollars
The crude is there; what is scarce is the ship to carry it the long way round. Record freight measures the bill for volume that cannot cross the strait, and the same volume writes a second bill in coal.
Mayyun Island changes hands and the detour around Hormuz closes
Bab al-Mandeb was the route that let Saudi crude reach Europe without passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Both approaches to the Gulf now sit under guns, and the cost of that shows up in voyage time and insurance rather than in missing barrels.
OpenAI paused its Pro tier, and the routing and caching work points at the same shortage
A subscription taken off sale is a capacity reading with a price attached. Put next to it a routing change that lifts a cache hit rate from roughly 25 per cent to 82 per cent, and a ranking where one design costs 1.61 dollars on one model and 0.023 dollars on another, and the denominator everybody is working on comes into view: hardware time per delivered answer.
Oracle spent 28.5 billion dollars of capital in the quarter its order book reached 664 billion dollars
Cloud infrastructure revenue rose 121 per cent and the contracted order book reached 664 billion dollars. In the same quarter 28.5 billion dollars of capital expenditure went out against 23 billion dollars of operating cash flow, leaving free cash flow at negative 5 billion dollars. Adobe, reporting hours later, converted 2.52 billion dollars of its 6.76 billion dollars of revenue into operating cash. The difference between the two is capital intensity, and that is the single assumption the model depends on.
