Togo secured 164 votes for a new map while adoption stayed voluntary
The African Union's cartography campaign ended in a General Assembly vote with the count published: 164 states in favour, the United States alone against, six abstentions. The text encourages the switch to Equal Earth and leaves adoption voluntary, which makes the vote itself the thing Togo won.
Which opponent does Astra's jailbreak score describe?
Two numbers in the same safety report describe two different attackers: one repeats a fixed list, the other learns from each refusal. The distance between 98.3 percent and roughly 67 percent is where the measurement actually lives.
A-CLOSE finds similar composite outcomes but opposing bleeding and ischaemic risks
The A-CLOSE trial compared clopidogrel alone with continued dual antiplatelet therapy in 3,203 patients at high ischaemic risk after coronary stenting. At 24 months, the composite outcome was similar at 5.0 per cent and 5.1 per cent. Monotherapy brought less clinically relevant bleeding but more major ischaemic events. The findings call for each patient's bleeding and clotting risks to be considered together.
Audacity 4.0 brings non-destructive workflow to audio editing
Audacity 4.0 rebuilds the open-source audio editor’s interface around Qt while adding non-destructive editing and overlapping clips. The Verge and MacGeneration covered the same September 4 release with complementary detail on project organisation and clip work.
Bodhan AI brings four open models to education in Indian languages
Bodhan AI and AI4Bharat released four open-weight models for speech recognition, text to speech, machine translation and optical character recognition. Analytics India Magazine and ETEducation report their language coverage and how interfaces hosted on sovereign infrastructure are being opened to education applications. The sources also identify NVIDIA's Nemotron family as the models' foundation.
Calculations put a dark-matter-fed black hole's survival threshold at about 40 tonnes
A theoretical calculation finds that a miniature black hole of about 40 tonnes could grow without evaporating inside a white dwarf in a dense dark-matter environment. The threshold reflects the balance between mass lost through Hawking radiation and mass gained from the star and dark matter. Surviving old white dwarfs and millisecond pulsars may also constrain some ultraheavy dark-matter candidates; no black hole was detected.
Canada loses 42,000 jobs as manufacturing remains a bright spot
Canada lost 42,000 jobs in August while unemployment stayed at 6.4 per cent. Manufacturing added 22,000 positions as employment fell in business and building support services. Annual wage growth stood at 2.0 per cent. After the summer's gains, Indeed job postings had levelled off following their spring increase, and the share of long-term unemployed reached 24 per cent.
Carbon dioxide appeared in 450P/LONEOS's coma, while water vapour did not
Space.com and the University of Central Florida report that the coma around 450P/LONEOS became more visible from 2019 to 2024. Webb spectra showed carbon dioxide, but no water-vapour or carbon-monoxide feature. The direct arXiv study combines Gemini North imaging with Webb measurements. The findings support carbon-dioxide outgassing as the activity source at this distance, but concern a single centaur.
Claude agents formalise Fermat's last theorem in Lean in 11 days
Anthropic says Claude agents converted Wiles and Taylor's existing Fermat proof into Lean in 11 days. Lean performed the final logical check on a formalisation of 13 million lines containing approximately 29,500 intermediate lemmas. The work puts every step of the proof completed in the 1990s into a computer-checkable form; it does not offer a new solution to the theorem.
Claude brings voice conversations to the CarPlay screen
Anthropic added CarPlay support to Claude's iPhone app, letting users start a voice conversation or return to a recent chat from the dashboard. The app cannot operate vehicle or phone functions, and third-party wake words are unsupported. Claude joins ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok and Meta AI in the conversational-app category Apple opened with iOS 26.4.
