Nineteen entries, one paired title

Turnstile opened its free Washington Monument benefit on 24 October with Birds, Real Thing and Endless. Those three works formed the entrance to the final concert of the band’s second North American Never Enough tour. For the listener, the first concrete programming choice is the distance between this opening and the song that gives the tour its name. Never Enough appears next to last. The tour title becomes a work approached near the conclusion rather than a heading delivered at the start.[1]

In the order published by Pitchfork, I Care / Dull occupies a single line, followed by Don’t Play, Drop and Wild Wrld. That notation matters when counting the programme: 19 entries do not mean that every entry represents only one work. Keeping two titles on one line presents a connection within the sequence. The order alone cannot tell us how many seconds the transition took, which keys connected the pieces or how the live arrangements differed from studio versions. It does tell us which works were placed beside one another.[1]

The final work’s neighbour

The middle passage runs through Mystery, Sunshower and 7 to Keep It Moving and Canned Heat, followed by Sole, Magic Man and Look Out for Me. Reading their order is more useful here than assigning each song a sound or emotional effect absent from the account. A concert makes works neighbours as well as selecting them. That adjacency gives the listener something to compare: what follows a piece is itself part of the evening’s repertoire.[1]

Holiday and Blackout lead into Never Enough; the final entry belongs to T.L.C. (Turnstile Love Connection). I read that placement as making the tour title a threshold immediately before the endpoint. Establishing that it was designed specifically for the benefit would require comparison with other concerts; the same order may simply have been the tour’s established sequence. The listener in Washington nevertheless encountered a clear arrangement: when the work sharing the album and tour title ended, one further work remained. The closing passage’s weight can be sought in that final adjacency.[1]
