The Chain receives its Apple TV premiere date

Fleetwood Mac: The Chain is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV in January. Frank Marshall directs the documentary, an authorized account of the band’s history.[1], [2]

The announced date is 29 January 2027. The Apple Original Films production brings together interviews with previously unseen archive footage, following both the music and the personal relationships of Fleetwood Mac’s members. It centres on the lineup of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Mark Monroe wrote the screenplay.[1]

The story follows the band into Rumours

The narrative begins with the encounter in 1974 that brought Buckingham and Nicks together with Fleetwood Mac’s British core. From that meeting it follows the band into the making of Rumours, released in 1977. Studio work, touring, breakups and reunions form part of the documentary’s announced scope, connecting the group’s musical collaboration with the lives of the people who made it.[1]

Christine McVie, who died in November 2022, is represented through her testimony. The film’s title comes from The Chain, the Rumours song that credits all five members as writers. The premiere falls during celebrations of the album’s 50th anniversary, returning to the album whose track supplied the documentary with its name.[1]

Marshall works with two documentary production companies

The Kennedy/Marshall Company and White Horse Pictures are producing The Chain. The producers include Nigel Sinclair, whose earlier music documentaries include The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years and No Direction Home: Bob Dylan. Sinclair’s involvement joins Marshall’s directing work and Monroe’s screenplay in the production team assembled for Fleetwood Mac’s story.[1]

Marshall is a director and producer with five Academy Award nominations. The new film enters an Apple Original Films catalogue that also includes Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. The January announcement sets out the documentary’s platform premiere, alongside its title, director and the band members whose history it follows.[1]
