Nineteen categories span Irish writing

The An Post Irish Book Awards announced their 2026 shortlists on 22 October, naming writers and illustrators across nineteen categories. The awards, in their twenty-first year, bring established authors and emerging writers into the same programme.[1], [2]

Maggie O’Farrell, Louise Kennedy, Donal Ryan, Colm Tóibín and Sally Hayden are among the shortlisted names. Other nominees include Djamel White, Nikita Hand, Vincent Browne, Liz Nugent and Ciara Mageean. The categories cover novels, history, biography, crime fiction, non-fiction, sport and Irish-language books. Children’s writing has separate junior and senior categories, alongside teen and young-adult literature.[1]

December brings two award announcements

Category winners will be named at the Convention Centre Dublin on Tuesday, 1 December. The overall Book of the Year will be revealed separately on 10 December during a one-hour programme on RTÉ One. Oliver Callan will host the television special, introducing the six finalists and their books before the overall winner is announced. Readers can vote through the awards website.[1]

Support for shortlisted poets and storytellers

The poetry and short-story categories continue a partnership with the Irish Independent newspaper’s New Irish Writing competition that began in 2024. Shortlisted writers in both categories will receive mentoring, courses and membership through the Irish Writers Centre, a support organisation for writers. Awards chair Sinéad McCorry highlighted the combination of established and emerging voices. The wider awards organisation brings together writers, illustrators, booksellers, publishers and librarians.[1]
