Japan IP Market sets its Cannes return for May 2027

Japan IP Market will return to Cannes on 14–15 May 2027, renewing a partnership between the Cannes Film Market and Tokyo’s TIFFCOM. The event brings Japanese rights holders into direct meetings with international producers seeking works to adapt. Its second edition follows the first gathering in May, with participating companies and the programme to be announced later.

A second Cannes meeting for Japanese rights holders

Japan IP Market, the event connecting Japanese intellectual-property rights holders with international producers, returns to Cannes, France, on 14–15 May 2027. The Cannes Film Market and TIFFCOM, the Tokyo International Film Festival’s content market, will hold it jointly for a second year.[1], [2]

The return was announced at a Tokyo conference devoted to continuing Japan’s international partnerships after its Country of Honor participation at Cannes. Alexandra Zakharchenko, who heads industry programmes at the Cannes Film Market, was among the speakers.[1]

Pitches and individual meetings build on the first edition

The first Japan IP Market took place in May as part of Japan’s Country of Honor programme. It offered project pitches, individual business meetings and industry discussions. Film companies Kadokawa, Shochiku and Toei Company participated. Fujimura Tetsu, executive producer of One Piece and founder of Filosophia, also spoke. The programme includes talks on adaptation development and rights acquisitions.[1]

Organisers connect the Cannes and Tokyo markets

Cannes Film Market executive director Guillaume Esmiol said the partnership aimed to keep international opportunities open beyond a single national showcase. TIFFCOM managing director Ikeda Kaori described a link between the Cannes event in May and the Tokyo rights market in October. Organisers plan to announce the 2027 participating companies and detailed programme in the coming months.[1]
