Gracie Abrams performs as Juliet and Romeo on Saturday Night Live

Gracie Abrams performed Hit the Wall and debuted Here You Come, There You Go live during Saturday Night Live’s Halloween episode. Her two costumes referenced Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo + Juliet, and the staging recalled its aquarium encounter. The appearance, her second as musical guest, followed the announcement of an expanded Daughter from Hell with five additional songs.

Two songs for the Halloween episode

American singer Gracie Abrams returned as musical guest to Saturday Night Live, the US television sketch-comedy programme, for its 31 October episode. It was her second appearance in that role. She began with Hit the Wall before singing Here You Come, There You Go. Stereogum identifies the latter performance as the song’s live debut. Actor Inde Navarrette, known for Obsession, hosted the episode, which combined the music with the programme’s recurring comedy segments.[1], [2]

Juliet gives way to Romeo

Abrams’s costumes and staging referred to Romeo + Juliet, director Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film starring Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. For the opening song she appeared as Juliet; for the next she became Romeo. The performance also recreated the visual idea of the characters meeting through the glass of a fish tank. ROMBO describes the angel costume in the first performance and the Hawaiian shirt with metallic knight’s sleeves in the second.[1], [2]

A new song joins the expanded album

Here You Come, There You Go had been released with the announcement of an expanded Daughter from Hell containing five additional songs. The television performance followed that announcement, presenting the new material alongside Hit the Wall. ROMBO places the expanded album’s release on 20 November.[1], [2]
