Netherlands reverses its Eurovision return over divisions on Israel
Dutch public broadcasting coordinator NPO reversed its plan to send an entry to Eurovision 2027, citing divisions over Israel’s participation. Talks with broadcasters failed to produce a suitable format after September’s proposed return. The Netherlands will continue to air the contest, which is due to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, on May 15.

NPO abandons September’s return plan
The Netherlands will not send an entry to Eurovision 2027 after reversing its proposed return. NPO, the organisation coordinating Dutch public broadcasting, announced the decision on October 27. Media director Jurre Bosman cited division over Israel’s participation. Broadcaster Avrotros had already said it would stay out; NPO stepped in during September to prepare a Dutch entry. The country will nevertheless continue to broadcast the competition.[1], [2]
Broadcaster talks fail to produce a format
NPO chair Jet de Ranitz said initial talks with broadcasters had suggested sufficient support for a return. The subsequent discussions failed to establish a suitable format, and the organisation concluded that participation was premature. Eurovision director Martin Green expressed sadness at the withdrawal while saying organisers understood the decision and respected the feelings behind it. He acknowledged differences of opinion both within countries and between them.[1]
Burgas prepares to host the next contest
Eurovision 2027 is scheduled for May 15 in Burgas, Bulgaria, after Dara won in Vienna with Bangaranga. The Netherlands joined Iceland, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia in boycotting the 2026 contest over Israel’s involvement. Ireland will also remain absent in 2027. The Czech public broadcaster has withdrawn separately, citing spending cuts. Organisers have announced voting changes and a restriction preventing countries engaged in armed conflict from hosting.[1]
