Kovač’s death is announced at Poljud
Croatian singer Mate Mišo Kovač died at his home in Podstrana, near Split, on October 31. He was 85. His death was announced to supporters at Poljud stadium during the Hajduk–Gorica football match, and the crowd sang his songs. His farewell is to take place in Split, with burial in Zagreb. Listeners left candles outside his birthplace in Šibenik, the Croatian coastal city where he was born in 1941.[1], [2]
Festival victories become a long repertoire
Kovač turned from football to music at 16 and began his professional career in the early 1960s. He recorded more than thirty albums. Proplakat će zora won first place at the Split Festival, as did Dobra ti večer, mati moja in 1980. His repertoire included Ostala si uvijek ista, Dalmacija u mom oku and Ako me ostaviš. He also sang Noćas ćemo zemlji ko materi reći with the vocal group Maslina.[1]
A Split concert returns to television
Croatian public broadcaster HRT scheduled a two-hour recording of his June 2022 concert at Split’s Stari plac for November 1. He received Šibenik’s city award in 2007 and the Porin lifetime achievement award in 2012. His work extended to cinema: he appeared with Rade Šerbedžija in the 1972 film Poslijepodne jednog fazana.[1]
