Scott’s Charleson film tops the field

Elsinore has the largest nomination tally, 12, at the British Independent Film Awards, the awards for independently made British cinema.[1], [2]

That puts it ahead of I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, with eight, and Animol, with seven. Simon Stone directs Elsinore, which received nominations for British independent film, directing, screenplay and lead performance. Andrew Scott plays the actor Ian Charleson, who performed Shakespeare’s Hamlet during the final months before his death from AIDS in 1990.[1]

Barnard and Walters follow Stone

Clio Barnard’s I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, set in Birmingham, is nominated for film, director and ensemble performance. Animol is Ashley Walters’ first feature as director, with Tut Nyuot nominated for lead performance and Walters for debut director. Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care has four nominations. Effi o Blaenau and Queen at Sea join Elsinore, Barnard’s film and Leigh’s film on the British independent film shortlist.[1]

Winners will be announced in December

The acting categories are gender-neutral. Scott and Nyuot’s fellow lead contenders include Juliette Binoche for Queen at Sea and Leisa Gwenllian for Effi o Blaenau. Elsinore also brought nominations for screenwriter Stephen Beresford and supporting performer Billie Piper. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 6 December at London’s Roundhouse.[1]
