Hover follows the 2025 album Hex Key
Mamalarky, an American indie-rock quartet, has announced Hover and released Sad Songs as its opening single. The album is scheduled through Epitaph for 12 February 2027, following Hex Key from 2025. Singer and guitarist Livvy Bennett and keyboardist Michael B. Hunter handled production for the new work together at their home studio in Glendale, California.[1], [2]
Tape and outdoor sounds shape the recording
Most rhythm tracks were recorded onto tape. The musicians also collected sounds of wind chimes, bells and rain alongside their instrumental recordings. Their studio previously belonged to a Hollywood backdrop artist; Hunter says its history can be felt in the music. Bennett describes the group’s practice as doing much of the work themselves. Drummer Dylan Hill and bassist Noor Khan complete the band.[1]
Sad Songs introduces Bennett’s account of loss
Bennett describes Sad Songs as company for people experiencing loneliness, loss and emotional confusion. She compares its mood to a brighter day after a depressive period, while still feeling unwell. For Hover more broadly, she says the band sought uncertainty and risk rather than relying on established ideas about themselves. The announced twelve-song sequence starts with Relic, places Sad Songs second and closes with How Could You Go.[1]
