A new peak in total reserves

The weekly official statistical supplement put total foreign exchange reserves at $785.706 billion on 4 September. The total increased by $44.903 billion from the previous week and reached a new record. The weekly release describes the composition of the reserve stock on a specified date; the reported increase is the change in the dollar value of that stock over one week.[1], [2]

Foreign currency assets dominate

Foreign currency assets accounted for $648.168 billion of the total. Gold was valued at $113.816 billion, special drawing rights at $18.806 billion and the reserve position in the International Monetary Fund at $4.916 billion. Together, these four components make up the overall reserve total. Foreign currency assets alone represented a larger share than the other three components combined.[1]

One component drove the increase

Foreign currency assets accounted for the whole weekly increase, while the rupee values of gold, special drawing rights and the IMF reserve position declined. The supplement measures foreign currency assets excluding securities held under swap arrangements and contributions to Nexus Global Payments. A special drawing right is the IMF reserve asset allocated to member countries and exchangeable for usable currencies.[1]
