Australia's unemployment rate rose to 4.6 per cent in August

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.6 per cent in August, from 4.5 per cent in July. Employment rose by 39.500 people while full-time work fell by 6.300. ABC News reported the same 4.6 per cent rate and called it the highest of the post-COVID era.

Unemployment rose to 4.6 percent

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the August labour-force figures on 24 September. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.6 per cent, from 4.5 per cent in July. Unemployment increased by 28.200 people to 722.900. ABC News reported that the national unemployment rate rose to 4.6 per cent in August, up from 4.5 per cent in July, and called it the highest unemployment rate in the post-COVID era.[1], [2]

All of the job gains were part-time

Employment rose by 39.500 people to 14.836.600. Full-time employment fell by 6.300 to 10.193.900. Part-time employment rose by 45.800 to 4.642.600. The bureau said all of the month's employment growth came from part-time work. That split is the bureau's account of how the higher unemployment rate arrived alongside more people in work.[1]

The rate is the highest since COVID

The bureau's table is the count: 4.6 per cent unemployment, 39.500 more people employed, and a fall in full-time work.
