Monzo weighs a Nubank sale while keeping a funding round in view
Sky News reports that Nu Holdings, the Brazilian group behind Nubank, has approached Britain’s Monzo about a possible purchase. The reported valuation range is 8 billion to 10 billion pounds, with advisers engaged but no agreement announced. Monzo’s board and shareholders are also considering a funding round for European expansion, so the talks have not settled the bank’s next ownership path.

Monzo and Nu Holdings enter early talks
Monzo, a British digital bank, is in early discussions with Nu Holdings about a possible sale, Sky News reported on 26 September. Nu Holdings owns Nubank, the Brazil-based digital banking group. The reported possible valuation is between 8 billion and 10 billion pounds, but that range is a figure discussed around a potential deal, not an agreed purchase price. A combination would move ownership of one of Britain’s large digital lenders to a company based in Brazil. The talks are preliminary, and neither bank has announced a transaction. That distinction matters because an approach can end without a sale or take a different form.[1]
Advisers join without a fixed price
Sky News reported that Monzo had appointed Morgan Stanley and Qatalyst as advisers to the process. The engagement shows the bank is examining a transaction, but it does not establish a buyer, final structure or price. Monzo declined to comment on the report. Nu Holdings offered no confirmation, saying speculation is outside its comment policy. The absence of a public announcement from either company leaves the terms in the category of reported talks. Customers and shareholders therefore have no completed change of control to assess; the only current development is that the possible combination is being explored.[1]
A funding round remains another route
The same report says Monzo’s board and shareholders are considering a separate funding round to support expansion in continental Europe. That route would raise capital without necessarily selling the bank to Nu Holdings. Sky News says Monzo has 16 million customers and was formally valued at in a secondary share sale in 2024 at 4.5 billion pounds. The older valuation is a historical reference, not a current offer. The board’s choice between a sale process and new funding remains open while discussions continue. The reported advisers and valuation range describe a live possibility, not the terms of a completed transaction.[1]
