Lima’s annual inflation reaches 4.55 per cent

Consumer prices in metropolitan Lima rose 4.55 per cent from a year earlier in September, with a 0.12 per cent monthly increase. Peru’s separate national index recorded annual inflation of 4.17 per cent. Nationwide fuel prices climbed during the month, while cheaper fish and chicken offset some increases in vegetables and sugar within the food basket.

Lima’s prices rise 4.55 per cent annually

Consumer prices in metropolitan Lima, Peru’s capital, increased 4.55 per cent from a year earlier in September. The country’s national statistics agency published the figures on 1 October.[1], [2]

Lima’s monthly increase was 0.12 per cent, taking cumulative January–September inflation to 4.28 per cent. Peru’s separate national consumer price index rose 0.14 per cent monthly, 4.02 per cent over the first nine months and 4.17 per cent annually. The national and metropolitan indexes cover different geographical areas.[1]

Fuel prices climb while fish and chicken get cheaper

Vehicle fuel prices rose 4.8 per cent during the month in the national index. Gasohol, a blended petrol fuel, increased 5.3 per cent and diesel rose 3.9 per cent. Vehicle liquefied petroleum gas fell 1.3 per cent. National transport prices increased 0.31 per cent, while restaurants and hotels rose 0.21 per cent.[1]

Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose just 0.01 per cent nationwide. Fish and seafood fell 5.6 per cent and cleaned chicken declined 5.5 per cent. Tomato prices increased 27.2 per cent, and refined brown sugar rose 15.9 per cent.[1]

Price movements vary across Peruvian cities

Prices increased in most cities and fell in four. The city of Cusco had the largest monthly increase at 0.89 per cent, while Pucallpa recorded the largest decline at 0.58 per cent. The national wholesale price index rose 0.57 per cent monthly and 4.88 per cent annually. Construction-material prices increased 0.57 per cent monthly and 2.96 per cent annually.[1]
