Registered unemployment increases by 23,587

Spain’s public employment service had 2,379,505 registered unemployed people at the end of September, an increase of 23,587 from August. The monthly rise was 1 per cent. The figures, released on 2 October, count people registered with the service.[1], [2]

Despite the monthly increase, the September total was 42,160 lower than a year earlier, a decline of 1.74 per cent. It was the lowest September level since 2007. The government also reported a registration regularisation process involving 56,476 people; 52 per cent had been registered for less than a month.[1]

First-time jobseekers show a large increase

People without previous employment showed an increase of 17,966. Registrations rose by 6,707 in services, 601 in agriculture and 39 in industry, while construction recorded a fall of 1,726. Among people under twenty-five, the registered count increased by 21,411 to 189,141. Registrations fell in the Canary Islands and La Rioja, but increased in the other fifteen autonomous communities of Spain.[1]

Permanent contracts make up 44.25 per cent

Employers signed 1,597,612 employment contracts during September. Of these, 706,948 were permanent contracts, representing 44.25 per cent of the total. The contract tally counts agreements rather than distinct people entering jobs. The release also contains August benefit figures: 1,896,142 people received benefits, with a coverage rate of 87.12 per cent. The average benefit reached 1,203.1 euros, up 2.7 per cent from a year earlier.[1]
