Italy’s industrial-vehicle registrations rebound, led by road tractors

Italian registrations of industrial vehicles above 3.5 tonnes returned to growth in September after two declining months. Road tractors expanded while rigid trucks continued to fall. Diesel still accounted for almost the entire market, and electric registrations over the first nine months were below the previous year. IVECO remained the largest supplier despite a decline in its own registrations. January–September registrations increased 2.62 per cent.

September ends two months of decline

Italy registered 2,060 industrial vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes in September, a rise of 3.15 per cent from the same month last year. The figures from Federauto, the Italian vehicle dealers’ federation, were released on October 6. The increase followed year-on-year declines of 0.72 per cent in July and 6.08 per cent in August. Registrations across January through September reached 20,685, up 2.62 per cent on the corresponding period a year earlier.[1], [2]

Road tractors accounted for 1,199 September registrations, up 9.80 per cent. Their nine-month total grew 13.75 per cent to 11,294. Rigid trucks moved in the other direction: September registrations fell 4.86 per cent to 861. Their January–September total of 9,391 was 8.17 per cent below the previous year. The growth in tractor registrations therefore accompanied continuing declines in the rigid-truck segment.[1]

Diesel dominates the new registrations

Diesel vehicles represented 96.65 per cent of the September market and 97.27 per cent over the first nine months. Electric vehicles held a 1.23 per cent share of the nine-month total. There were 255 electric registrations during that period, compared with 490 a year earlier. September electric rigid-truck registrations nevertheless increased 10 per cent to 22. In the light electric rigid-truck class, registrations rose from 13 to 21, reaching a 20.39 per cent share of that weight class. Its nine-month electric count fell from 443 to 194.[2]

IVECO leads as rival brands gain

IVECO remained the largest brand in the overall market with 474 September registrations and a 23.01 per cent share, despite a 9.02 per cent fall in its registrations. Among road tractors, Mercedes-Benz Trucks registered 211, followed by MAN with 201, Scania with 170, DAF with 168 and Volvo Trucks with 165. Across the overall market, MAN grew 31.98 per cent, DAF 26.63 per cent and Renault Trucks 20.33 per cent. Volvo Trucks declined 12.86 per cent and Ford Trucks 36.84 per cent. Federauto called for European emissions rules to recognise geographical and economic differences.[1], [2]
