Stellantis output rebounds in Italy while Cassino’s production falls

Stellantis increased Italian vehicle production by 28.3 per cent in the first nine months, according to metalworkers’ union FIM-CISL. The total remained below 2024, and the union’s full-year expectation is around 450,000 vehicles. Growth at Mirafiori and Melfi accompanied a sharp decline at Cassino, where working days were limited and decisions on future production were postponed.

Nine-month recovery remains below 2024

Stellantis factories in Italy manufactured 340,745 cars and commercial vehicles in January through September, up 28.3 per cent from a year earlier. The figures were released on October 6 by FIM-CISL, an Italian metalworkers’ union. The previous year’s comparable total was 265,490. Car output rose 36.7 per cent to 206,945, while commercial-vehicle production increased 17.3 per cent to 133,800. The union identified the new Jeep Compass and hybrid Fiat 500 as contributors to the recovery.[1], [2]

The total still fell short of the 387,600 vehicles made in the comparable period of 2024 and the 462,424 manufactured in 2020. FIM-CISL expects approximately 450,000 vehicles for the whole of 2026. Its general secretary, Ferdinando Uliano, described the results as stronger than 2025 but weaker than earlier expectations. The union also said reduced use of income-support arrangements reflected both new models and lower employment.[1], [2]

Cassino slows as Mirafiori adds output

Cassino, a Stellantis factory in Italy, manufactured 8,897 cars, a fall of 37.1 per cent. Its output included 5,227 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio vehicles and 3,670 Maserati Grecale vehicles. The plant has approximately 2,120 workers and operated for just 56 days in nine months. FIM-CISL projects approximately 12,000 cars for the full year. Final decisions on future production have been deferred until year-end.[2]

At Mirafiori, the Italian factory making electric and hybrid Fiat 500 models, production reached 46,323, up 151.1 per cent from 18,450. The plant added 600 workers in February and a second shift in March. Material shortages and fewer orders subsequently slowed activity, and two weeks of income support were requested for October. FIM-CISL is calling for a second car model at the factory.[2]

Melfi grows and Atessa leads commercial vehicles

The Italian plant at Pomigliano manufactured 103,500 vehicles. Melfi, another Italian factory, made 47,580, a rise of 77.2 per cent, with 4,390 workers. Its output had been 26,850 a year earlier and 54,240 two years earlier. Melfi nevertheless recorded 87 collective stoppage days during the period. Atessa’s 133,800 commercial vehicles accounted for 39.3 per cent of Stellantis’s Italian output. Income-support arrangements affecting approximately 200 workers there ended from July, and more than 1 billion euros of investment is planned over five years.[1], [2]
