German exports fall in August as US shipments retreat
Germany’s goods exports fell 0.8 per cent from July in August, while imports rose. Shipments to the United States dropped 6.3 per cent, contrasting with increases to Britain and China. The adjusted trade surplus narrowed to 19.5 billion euros. Destatis’s preliminary figures still put overall exports above their level a year earlier, with different destinations moving in opposite directions.

Monthly exports fall while imports rise
Germany’s goods exports fell in August compared with July. The German federal statistics office, Destatis, published its preliminary figures on October 8.[1], [2]
The calendar- and seasonally-adjusted decline was 0.8 per cent. Exports reached 137.6 billion euros and remained 6.2 per cent above August 2025. Imports rose 0.9 per cent from July to 118.1 billion euros, leaving an adjusted surplus of 19.5 billion euros, down from 21.6 billion euros in July.[1]
Shipments to the United States drop
Exports to the United States fell 6.3 per cent from July to 13.5 billion euros, while remaining 22.6 per cent higher than a year earlier. Sales to Britain rose 16.7 per cent to 7.9 billion euros and exports to China increased 4.7 per cent to 5.9 billion euros. Imports from China rose 11 per cent to 16.8 billion euros.[1]
EU trade varies between destinations
Exports to European Union countries fell 0.6 per cent to 77.5 billion euros. Within that total, euro-area exports rose 0.8 per cent to 54.3 billion euros, while shipments to EU countries outside the currency area fell 3.5 per cent to 23.2 billion euros. Exports to countries outside the EU declined 1.1 per cent to 60 billion euros.[1]
