US agriculture forecast adds 8.3 million tonnes to world corn stocks

The US Department of Agriculture raised its forecast for world corn ending stocks in the 2026/27 season to 280.4 million tonnes, an increase of 8.3 million tonnes. Higher expected US stocks reflect most of the revision as American production rises more than use. Outside the United States, corn production forecasts fell, particularly in the European Union, the Philippines and Mexico.

USDA raises corn production and stock estimates

The US Department of Agriculture raised corn production and ending-stock forecasts in its October World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. The update, published on 9 October, increases expected US corn output through higher yields. It also lifts the amount of corn expected to remain at the end of the 2026/27 marketing season.[1], [2]

Larger US stocks drive the global increase

World corn ending stocks are forecast at 280.4 million tonnes, up 8.3 million tonnes from the previous estimate. Most of that increase reflects larger projected US stocks. US supply rises more than use, alongside a larger expected carryover at the season’s end. The balance separates production, consumption, trade and stocks, with the revision changing the expected amount left after use.[1]

Corn production declines outside the United States

Outside the United States, the department reduced corn production forecasts, especially for the European Union, the Philippines and Mexico. France’s crop is forecast to be 38 per cent smaller than a year earlier. Global coarse grain production, a category wider than corn, was lowered by 1 million tonnes to 1.589 billion tonnes. The revisions describe the department’s expectations for the ongoing 2026/27 season.[1]
