Energy inflation slows from September

Germany’s preliminary annual inflation rate fell from 3.3 per cent in September to 2.8 per cent in October. The decline extended to energy and services, while the annual food-price increase was unchanged. The national consumer price index registered a monthly fall of 0.2 per cent. These are provisional October estimates, with final figures scheduled for November 11.[1], [2]

Core inflation falls to 2.1 per cent

Excluding food and energy, prices were 2.1 per cent higher than a year earlier, against 2.4 per cent in September. Energy still cost 12.2 per cent more than a year before, although its annual rise had been 14.9 per cent in September. Services inflation eased from 2.7 per cent to 2.5 per cent. The annual increase for goods slowed from 3.8 per cent to 3.0 per cent, while food stayed at 0.4 per cent.[1]

European comparison index also records a monthly decline

The harmonised index of consumer prices, used for comparisons across the European Union, also showed annual inflation of 2.8 per cent. Its monthly price change was a decrease of 0.1 per cent. That index and the national measure differ in coverage and weighting. Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, introduced a new consumption classification for the harmonised series in January and changed its reference year to 2025.[1]
