Deductions rise for each filing status

The US Internal Revenue Service, the federal tax agency, announced inflation adjustments for the 2027 tax year. The changes include larger standard deductions and revised income brackets. Jointly filing married couples receive a deduction of 33,200 dollars, up from 32,200 dollars. The amount for single filers is 16,600 dollars and for heads of household 24,925 dollars. These provisions generally apply to returns filed in 2028.[1], [2]

The top rate remains unchanged

The highest federal income-tax rate remains 37 per cent, with inflation adjustment changing the income threshold at which it applies. For single filers that threshold is 661,375 dollars; for married couples filing jointly it is 793,650 dollars. The starting points for the 35 per cent rate are 264,550 dollars and 529,100 dollars respectively. The adjustment covers nearly 70 tax provisions overall.[1]

Child credits and exclusions also increase

The agency set the child tax credit at 2,300 dollars per qualifying child, an increase of 100 dollars. Its refundable portion rises by 100 dollars to 1,800 dollars. The maximum earned income tax credit for taxpayers with three or more qualifying children increases from 8,231 dollars to 8,496 dollars. The annual gift exclusion rises from 19,000 dollars to 20,000 dollars, alongside a higher basic estate-tax exclusion.[1]
